Abstract

Traffic management is used to achieve goals such as safety, network throughput, travel time reliability and environmental quality of life. It attempts to direct and guide traffic flows by influencing the behaviour of individual drivers. Drivers now have a greater mental workload as a result of increasing traffic volumes, temporarily narrower lanes, road works, different maximum speeds depending on location, and increasing amounts of information on and along roads. It is therefore essential for the Public Works Department - Rijkswaterstaat - to introduce structural changes to traffic management. 'RoadWise' has investigated the potential of customised in-car information. For the covering abstract see ITRD E134653 .
