In california, traffic violators can avoid fines by getting court permission to attend a traffic safety school. The names of some schools, however, are distressingly comic. Some schools specialize in conducting classes in languages other than english. The california department of motor vehicles requires the schools to offer at least 400 minutes of instruction. California safety council inspectors makeunannounced visits to the schools, and as a result of these visits, nine schools have lost their licenses, two licenses have been suspended, and four schools given warnings.
