Abstract

Although it is accepted that the private car offers the most flexible form of transport in many circumstances, it is possible to demonstrate the importance of using an efficient public transport system, and buses in particular, as part of a transport policy to control traffic growth. The author suggests how greater investment in replacement buses and the much greater use of bus lanes could make bus services more attractive as well as relieving congestion.
