Abstract

This paper provides a brief overview of the work that has been performed to date by the National Automated Highway System (AHS) Consortium (NAHSC) in the development of an AHS concept and the role that case studies will play in the AHS concept development and selection. Lessons learned from the National ITS Architecture development process in terms of the level of specificity that stakeholders need for consensus can be valuable for NAHSC. Case studies are the true vehicle that can facilitate consensus while providing valuable "real life" test beds for numerous AHS scenario and concept evaluations, prototype development, and demonstrations. This paper reports on the process that was used to select the case study sites and scope of the work. It also gives a summary of the results of the selection process as well as preliminary analyses and results on those case studies that are currently under way.
