The role of DSRC in ITS.

Abstract

Mobile communication is one of the key technologies in ITS. Generally, there are two radio communication types in mobile communication: wide-area wireless communications (WAC) and dedicated short-range communications (DSRC). Each of them has merits and demerits, and they complement each other. In this paper, the authors describe the characteristics of DSRC. DSRC has some merits that WAC does not have, for instance easy vehicle location identification, stable communication and large communication capacity. Therefore, DSRC is very effective in situations of high road density and high traffic density. They also consider the share of WAC and DSRC in applications of ITS, and point out some necessary special attention in each application and medium. In conclusion they overview how mobile communications have been introduced in general and specifically in ITS and Japan.
