Abstract

The study provides a review of recent literature concerning the relationship between driving fatigue and accidents. The review concentrates on the literature concerning fatigue and rural accidents but also includes some relevant observations from urban accident studies. The concept of fatigue is complex and definition is subject to debate; these complications are discussed. The available evidence of a relationship between fatigue and accidents is examined, together with research methods used in assessing such a relationship. Finally, potential countermeasures are discussed, and recommendations made, concerning directions for future research. (Author/publisher)
