Many agencies of the federal government are involved in a study and action regarding traffic accident prevention. The activities range from the writing of specifications for safety equipment to be supplied in government vehicles to the support of research both within and without government agencies. The problem of road vehicle safety is greatly complicated by the fact that its technical content is multi- disciplinary and that it is dependent on the administration of a multitude of regional authorities. The role of the federal government is seen as one of coordination, liaison and dissemination of information in a voluntary way of the work of these many authorities as well as the identification and support of research where needs are identified and no agency exists to undertake the work. The federal government must also deal with the united states government authority to achieve uniformity of motor vehicle safety standards in north America.
