Abstract

This paper is focused on the functional classification of highways and its part in the process of achieving road traffic safety as an element of sustainable and integrated transport systems. According to functional classification, the character of service highways are intended to provide, is the main criterion for grouping into various classes and systems. Road safety is an important component in this process of forming the hierarchical structure of road network function, as a base for rational network organization. The inclusion of the elements of road design programmes in functional classification, contribute towards higher road safety level. (Author/publisher)
