Abstract

In October 1998, ODS Ltd were commissioned by the Scottish Executive on behalf of the Scottish Road Safety Campaign (SRSC) to undertake a study which had as its main aim "to devise an effective strategy for establishing, maintaining and promoting road safety in the curriculum". The specific objectives of the study are: to assess the role which The Scottish Executive Education Department plays in encouraging inclusion of road safety education in School; to investigate the extent to which guidelines/requirements issued by Local Authority Education Departments influence the provision of road safety education at a more local level; identify the key factors in the Head Teacher's decision whether to include road safety education in schools; examine the potential role of the Scottish Qualifications Authority in providing a context for road safety education in schools through examination and syllabus requirements; identify the mechanisms by which road safety education can be improved and delivered more effectively and equitably in both primary and secondary schools. The first four of these objectives were to form Stage One of the study. (Author/publisher)
