Abstract

For the last 15 years the HUK - Verband (German Automobile Insurers Accident Research) has analyzed over 100000 road accidents with respect to accident causes, driver behaviour, accident intensity/ car damage, and resulting injuries. Permanent cooperation with the government, vehicle manufacturers, universities and research institutes takes place. The HUK - Verband has two technical offices: (1) the "Loss Prevention Office", based in Cologne, examines how to reduce the danger of accidents by highway planning; (2) the Department for Automotive Engineering and Accident Research, in Munich, which deals with accident avoidance through driver education, active and passive safety of cars and motorcycles, research into injuries, and possible technical modifications to vehicles. This paper gives examples of practical work conducted in Munich.
