Abstract

Arguing that the pilot study is the pivot point in travel survey methodology, this paper presents the case using numerous examples from the 1981 sydney travel survey. Evidence of the significance of the pilot is shown using examples from all phases of survey design - sample selection, questionnaire development, field work, and analysis. In particular, the significance which results of pilot studies may have on response rates and trip rates is supported with examples. It is concluded that pilot studies and pre-tests form necessary links between all stages of travel survey development. (Author/publisher) for the covering abstract of the conference see IRRD 286978.
