Abstract

In addition to a continuous and detailed accident analysis of a country or a region (the smaller the better) the consideration of research results is a very important factor which allows the elaboration of tailored road safety programmes. Designing an educational programme means to answer a number of standard questions by scientific research, for instance: (1) What are the characteristics (problems) of the target group?; (2) What need to be changed?; (3) To whom must the programme directed and why?; (4) What media method, etc., is qualified to present the message or to change attitudes, etc.?; (5) What organisational framework is needed to implement the programme?; and (6) how should the efficiency of the programme be defined and measured? Another important aspect concerning the link between scientific research and the elaboration of educational programmes is the detailed knowledge about the chosen target group. The first step to select a target group is the exact definition of the goal which should be achieved. A target group segmentation will be more promising in many cases than a general definition of the target group like "the children" and "their behaviour". One of the practical examples of traffic education programmes in Austria is the Children's Traffic Club.
