Abstract

A common approach to the architecture of some of the Advanced Traffic Management Systems in European research and development projects has been based on conceiving the system as an intelligent decision support system able to identify current traffic conditions on the network from real time traffic measurements, make a diagnosis of the network state, identify potential or actual conflicts and propose strategies to prevent or alleviate these conflicts. The decision support mechanisms have been based on evaluation by simulation of the scenarios for the proposed management strategies, providing the human operator with a quantitative basis. This paper describes AIMSUN2, the microscopic simulator used in ETERPRICE. How AIMSUN2 is embedded in the decision support system through a translator that automatically builds the simulation model of the selected scenario from GEODYN, an ad hoc geographical information system specifically designed for traffic management applications, is outlined.
