The role of smart cards in public transport integration : lessons for Santiago.

Abstract

In an attempt to reduce travel time and increase ridership on public transport, smart card technology has been applied to integrated fare payment systems in Europe, Asia, and North America. This paper reviews the results of this technology, and suggests the possible benefits and costs of developing and implementing such a system in Santiago, Chile. (A) The French title of the paper is: "Le rôle de la carte intelligente dans l'intégration des transports en commun: lecons pour Santiago".
