This study reviews a number of long-term developments which can influence traffic and transport in the Netherlands. These developments are classified among the following five themes: (1) time and space spending in the form of work and leisure activities; (2) technological innovations, placed in a more historical context; (3) the tension between individuality and collectivity; (4) changes in attitude; and (5) changes in the administration in the Netherlands in particular. Possibilities for further research in the field of traffic and transport are presented within each theme.
