This paper presents a route choice support system for a physically disabled pedestrian who uses a wheelchair. The computer-aided system is integrated by a geographic information system that consists of a database, a calculation program and a visual interface. The database includes the data of time, distance and obstacles on a street network. Such obstacles are: roughness, inclination, railroad crossings and so forth. Routes between an origin and a destination are restricted for a pedestrian who uses a wheelchair because of the existence of such obstacles. The allowable level of an obstacle is different based on his/her physical condition. The computer-aided route choice support system has been developed. A pedestrian who uses a wheelchair inputs an origin and a destination and selects allowable levels of obstacles on a route. Therefore, the shortest route between them, which satisfies the allowable levels of obstacles, is calculated as a recommended route. He/She can choose a suitable route to get to the destination based on his/her own physical condition.
