Abstract

A route guidance system for motorists in metropolitan northeastern New Jersey has recently been developed. The system detects traffic bottlenecks via computer processing of roadway sensor data; motorists are then provided with roadway status and alternate routing information. Traffic data are continuously stored and may be retrieved for planning purposes.
