Abstract

Until recently, route guidance systems were an insignificant element of the intelligent transportation systems (ITS) market. These systems were primarily used by the more sophisticated small-parcel delivery services, trucking firms, and taxi services. With the expansion of the internet and the growing popularity of in-vehicle electronics, route guidance systems are experiencing explosive growth. Current forecasts anticipate that these systems will become a major economic force in ITS. As they become increasingly integrated with the roadside infrastructure, route guidance systems will also have a major influence on transportation management.
