Abstract

The FIFA World Cup 2006 took place between the 9th of June and 9th of July 2006 in Germany. The visitors of this major international event have found in Germany an efficient, innovative and environment-friendly traffic system. This was a basic pre-requisite for enabling a stress-free mobility for all, guests and residents, in Germany. The concept for the route guidance, initiated by the Federal Ministry for Transport, Building and Urban Affairs, developed by the Federal Highway Research Institute (BASt) and realised by the federal states and the involved municipalities was a major contribution to the successfully organisation of this important internationalevent. The Federal Ministry developed the backbone for a uniform traffic sign system for the motorized individual traffic as part of the overall traffic management concept on motorways during the FIFA World Cup 2006. The clear signposting concept contributed to the success of the local traffic guidance concepts and the traffic management strategies in the 12 venues. There exist no reports about major disturbances of the traffic flow duringthe tournament. For the covering abstract see ITRD E134653.
