Abstract

Philips Car Systems developed CARiN, an autonomous navigation and guidance system for motor vehicles. CARiN, using a digital map stored on a Compact Disc, determines continuously the position of the car, plans very fast the best route and guides the driver, with audible and visual direction information, along the route to the destination. In addition, CARiN offers a number of complementary facets in functionality, including the displaying of maps and the location of services and facilities. This paper focuses on the Route Planning and Route Guidance functions. (A)
