Abstract

RMTS (Remote Traffic Microwave Sensor) radar is a low-cost, self-contained general purpose traffic sensor which can detect and monitor road traffic in up to 12 independent zones. It is designed for use in urban traffic control and traffic monitoring and management. Features of the system are outlined and 3 configurations described for particular applications. Examples are given of the use of RMTS. These include a) the use of side-fire highway monitoring to count traffic, b) forward-looking highway monitoring for speed detection, c) side-fired actuated intersection control, d) diagonal mounting actuated intersection control, e) forward-looking actuated intersection control and f) an automatic incident detection system.
