Abstract

This paper describes the RUF system concept as a new combination of well proven technologies. The RUF is a small electric/hybrid dual-mode car developed for using a special guideway as well as for driving on normal roads. It can go directly from a road to a special triangular rail, at 30 kph switching speed. It can also leave the rail for the road. RUFs have unlimited braking power on the rail and can be fed electrically through the rail. A larger RUF version, the MAXI-RUF, can be used as a flexible automated people mover with the units coupling into trains. The RUF rail system is `ultra light'. Riding on this, RUFs provide reduced energy consumption, emissions, noise, congestion, and improved capacity. See also IRRD 886917.
