Abstract

In different recent notes of the Dutch national government such as the fourth note Extra on Physical Planning, outlines for the future environmental structure of The Netherlands are presented. As far as is known, quantifying the environmental consequences of this structure and a systematic weighing of alternatives against each other have not taken place yet. Therefore, a study has been made into the effects of mobility and the environmental consequences of alternatives for the environmental structure of The Netherlands in the year 2015. The study has concentrated on a number of environmental effects of traffic and transport at national level: emissions for instance of carbon dioxide and nitrogen oxides, and the energy consumption of cars, trains and buses. Roughly, locations for 800,00 houses and 1,8 million jobs have to be found for the period 1995-2015. In view of this task, five future variants for the environmental development of living and working have been compared to each other.
