In previous observations of cyclists’ behaviour] it was found that up to 50% of cyclists show at least one infringement of traffic regulations. If asked why, some cyclists reported not to know about the regulations. As cycling does not require any formal training, we wanted to know about the knowledge of regulations concerning cycling among German cyclists. An online survey was constructed as a multiple choice quiz containing 41 questions on eight topics (e.g. usage of roadway, interaction with other vehicles / pedestrians). 353 cyclists answered all questions and were included in the analyses. First analyses show that the amount of rule knowledge is diverse with no participant knowing all rules and some knowing very little. A cluster analysis revealed four types of bicycle usage among the participants. Knowledge differences between these cycling types will be presented. (Author/publisher)
