Abstract

After two experiments with "singing lanes" on route 46 in 1947-48, the New Jersey Department proceeded in the fall of 1965 with a full-scale installation of "rumble strips" on the Northern approaches to the Red Lion Circle. Two years after installation it was found that the Red Lion prototype has proved effective and durable. It led to a set of tentative specifications for further applications of the "rumble" principle.
