This paper discusses the process used by Transit New Zealand in developing guidelines for the use of rumble strips in New Zealand. The benefit in having guidelines was identified in an international review of their use. The resulting guidelines were developed primarily from those used in both Australia and the UK. In addition to these guidelines, a process for evaluating the on-site performance of rumble strips has also been developed. The intention is for the evaluation to be used to refine the guidelines to best suit New Zealand conditions. This evaluation process has recently been applied to a rumble strip installation on State Highway 1 near Wellington, New Zealand. As a result, recommendations regarding future monitoring and application practices have been made and are presented in this paper. (A)
