Abstract

In an effort to test an audible means of warning drivers of dangers ahead 23 experimental rumble strips on approaches to 9 intersections selected on the basis of their accident history are studied. Three different rumble strip configurations were used in the test. A before an after accident study was conducted the results of which showed that rumble strips can be used as a temporary method of warning motorists. They are of little or no value as a permanent installation.
