Abstract

Accidents in rural areas account for about 46% of fatal acci- dents and 34% of accidents resulting in an admission to hos- pital in Victoria. This paper presents a description of acci- dents which occurred in rural Victoria and compares the pro- perties of rural accidents to the properties of accidents occurring in Melbourne.Accidents which occurred on open roads were more likely to result in a fatality, more likely to in- volve alcohol and more likely to be a singe vehicle accident.
