Abstract

The Austroads Rural Road Design guide has been prepared to provide the basis for a consistent approach to the geometric design of rural roads across Australia and New Zealand. This guide provides explanatory background information and figures and tables of design values that form the fundamentals of best practice road design. The guide provides an up-to-date coverage of Australian and New Zealand road design practice. The various chapters in the publication provide a guide to the standards that can be achieved within social, environmental, economic and other constraints using best local and overseas practice. This publication provides a set of guidelines rather than a prescriptive set of standards. Designers should apply the recommended guidelines in conjunction with appropriate skill and judgement to the particular issue that they are considering. Designers are also encouraged to familiarise themselves with local road authority guides which may provide more detail or vary in regard to some design criteria. (Author/publisher)
