Abstract

Details are reported of a three-year research project started in 1998 at the Danish Road Institute to establish a basis for evaluating the rutting and weathering resistance of Danish asphalt pavements. Brief summaries are given of two papers presented at the Euraspalt and Eurobitumen Congress in Barcelona, September 2000. Paper 1 deals with an examination of rutting and weathering characteristics. Ten pavements, selected for overlaying due to rutting generated in the bituminous layers, were classified according to rutting properties and dynamic creep tests. Paper 2 covers the estimation of deformation in Danish motorway pavements of hot rolled asphalt (HRA). Results are discussed of accelerated testing of slabs cut from motorway pavements, and an empirical model to estimate rutting in motorway pavements is suggested.
