Rutting behavior between SMA mixtures with crumb rubber modifiers and fiber additives under repeated loading.

Abstract

The aim of this research was first to determine the master curve of dynamic modulus of the SMA mixtures with crumb rubber modifier (asphalt-rubber) and mineral fiber additive (asphalt-fiber) both unconfined and confined through the complex modulus test. Subsequently, a series of repeated sinusoidal loading tests on permanent deformation were performed for the asphalt-rubber and asphalt-fiber SMA mixtures at the same testing condition. The results of dynamic modulus master curves were used to evaluate the rutting performance between the two mixtures. The asphalt-rubber SMA mixtures contain an amount of 20 percent crumb rubber by the weight of the asphalt cement, and the asphalt-fiber SMA mixtures were sampled by blending mineral fiber with 0.4 per cent by weight of the total mixtures. Test results showed that the asphalt-rubber SMA mixtures exhibited the higher dynamic modulus master curves compared to the asphalt- fiber SMA mixtures both unconfined and confined. The repeated loading tests demonstrated the superior rutting resistance for asphalt-rubber SMA mixtures. Moreover, both SMA mixtures illustrated the validity of the principles of time-temperature superposition in the stages of viscoplastic straining during the repetitive loading tests.
