Abstract

This paper reviews the current status of traffic safety in Serbia and the measures being undertaken to improve the situation. Current problems are poor maintenance of roads and vehicles, high accident risk and speeding, poor signalisation and lack of public awareness of road safety. New laws are in preparation for licensing public transport and road management. Priorities and financing are being set for road maintenance. The concept of sustainable development, which covers its expenditure and is not undertaken at a cost to future generations, involves considering the overall development of the traffic system and possible negative effects, while planning for major investment. Sustainable development depends on raising public awareness and the optimal utilization of resources. Professional and non-governmental organisations should participate in all activities related to the field of road traffic. For the covering abstract see ITRD E118917.
