Abstract

Metropolitan Expressway, an intraurban expressway, has a number of tunnels and semi-underground sections and their ratio to all the roadway sections in service distance has been on the upswing and is expected to increase more and more. An analysis of accidents by road structure type by the Metropolitan Expressway Public Corporation (MEPC) disclosed that the rates of accidents occurring inside the tunnels and semi-underground sections were comparatively high. Especially inside these tunnels, each of which is a closed space, any abnormal incidents are likely to lead to serious accidents. To the MEPC, taking safety measures for the tunnels is an important task. Thus, the MEPC is looking into a Safe Driving Support System intended for safe driving inside the tunnels, as reported in this paper. For the covering abstract see ITRD E114174.
