Abstract

VRU-TOO (Vulnerable Road User Traffic Observation and Optimization) has been carrying out detailed research on the behaviour of pedestrians as they cross the road and interact with vehicle traffic. Based on this research, models have been developed linking the various behaviours to the safety outcome of the various crossing strategies. Simultaneously, a computer simulation model, originally developed in DRIVE I, has been refined and calibrated for Portugal. Both these aspects of the VRU-TOO work will aid in the further development of signal systems that give proper consideration to pedestrian needs. (A)
