Abstract

CARS FITTED WITH ENERGY ABSORBING BUMPERS AND BONNET LEADING EDGES HAVE BEEN TESTED TO EXAMINE THE IMPORTANCE OF CAR FRONTAL SHAPE TO THE SAFETY OF PEDESTRIANS IN IMPACTS. RESULTS SHOW THAT WITH AN ENERGY ABSORBING FRONT, IMPROVED PROTECTION MAY BE AFFORDED FOR BOTH CHILD AND ADULT PEDESTRIANS AT IMPACT SPEEDS UP TO 40 KM/H PROVIDING THAT EXTREMES OF EITHER LOW SLOPING OR HIGH NEAR VERTICAL FRONTAL SHAPES ARE AVOIDED. THE MOST ACCEPTABLE COMPROMISE FOR THE CHILD AND ADULT IS OBTAINED WITH A 700 MM HIGH BONNET AND 60 MM BUMPER LEAD. THE IMPORTANCE OF THE BUMPER HEIGHT IS CONSIDERED AND SUGGESTIONS MADE FOR COMBINING THE RESPECTIVE MERITS OF THE LOW AND HIGH MOUNTED BUMPER. IMPACT VELOCITIES OF THE HEAD AND THORAX ONTO THE BONNET SHOW HOW THE IMPACT REQUIREMENTS CAN BE MET IN THE DESIGN OF THE BONNET TOP AND WINGS OF A CAR FOR PEDESTRIAN SAFETY. AN ILLUSTRATION IS INCLUDED OF A MEDIUM SIZED CAR MODIFIED AT TRRL WHICH DEMONSTRATES THE PRACTICABILITY OF A LAYOUT WITH A SOFT FRONT.
