Safety aspects of CRT touch panel controls in automobiles.

Abstract

Eight young and healthy drivers were used to investigate looking behaviour and lateral path deviations when driving in a straight path while operating a simulated Cathode Ray Tube (CRT) touch panel display. It is concluded that, the introduction of CRT touch panel controls into automobiles should be reconsidered and delayed until more research with regard to driver information acquisition, information processing, eye- hand- finger coordination and touch accuracy, control actions and safety aspects has been conducted and the designs and applications have been improved to allow safe operation during driving.
