The safety aspects of the VW auto 2000.

Abstract

THE VW AUTO 2000 CONCEPT WAS A SIGNIFICANT IMPROVEMENT IN VEHICLE SAFETY, A REDUCTION IN EXHAUST GASES AND NOISE, AND INCREASED FUEL ECONOMY. THE USE OF ALTERNATIVE MATERIALS AND ELECTRONIC AIDS WAS INVESTIGATED. THE RESULT WAS A 2-DOOR, 4-SEATER SALOON WITH A 3-CYLINDER DIESEL ENGINE (1981) AND A SPARK-IGNITION ENGINE (1982). DETAILS ARE GIVEN OF THE DIESEL ENGINE AND STOP/START SYSTEM, SPARK-IGNITION ENGINE WITH AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION, AND ACOUSTIC CAPSULE. THE SAFETY ASPECTS COVER: ACCIDENT AVOIDANCE AND MITIGATION OF INJURIES (TO PEDESTRIANS AND TO CAR OCCUPANTS.) THE DESIGN OF THE CAR BODY WAS MODIFIED AND A SPECIAL SEKURIFLEX WINDSCREEN WAS BONDED TO THE BODY FRAME. ENERGY-ABSORBING INNER DOOR PARTS REDUCED THE DANGER OF INJURY IN SIDEWAYS COLLISIONS. A PASSIVE SEAT BELT SYSTEM WITH KNEE BOLSTER WAS FITTED. IMPACT TESTS WITH ANTHROPOMETRIC DUMMIES WERE CARRIED OUT TO CHECK THE LEVEL OF PROTECTION ACHIEVED.
