Abstract

The most important type of accident for which protection OS required is the head-on collision. The detailed measures suggested as likely to increase protection are a improving the form of the load-extension curve of the safety harness, to increase energy absorption, b. changing the shape of the passenger compartment to allow greater unobstructed extension of the safety harness, c. combining safety harnesses with suitable strengthened seats, d. increasing the strength of the passenger compartment so that it remains intact at least at the highest head-on impact speed for which the safety harness will give protection, e. increasing the force applied to the body by the harness, f. improving the shape of the load-deformation curve of the front part of the car and making it of appropriate strength to enable the safety harness, modified in the ways suggested, to work with greatest efficiencies.
