Abstract

The Danish Road Safety Commission's plan of action has the objective of reducing the number of fatalities and injuries in traffic by 45% from year 1988 to 2000. Improvement in the safety of cyclists in urban areas will therefore be of great significance to the attainment of this objective. For this reason the Danish Road Directorate started in 1991, a three-year research programme on the safety of cyclists in urban areas. The programme will finish in the spring 1994. The research comprises 4 projects: (1) Cycle lanes in urban areas; (2) Design of urban intersections; (3) Safety of cyclists in urban roundabouts; and (4) Conflicts between cyclists and bus passengers at bus stops. These projects are described in this paper. (A).
