Abstract

This report summarises and describes a series of projects included in the Road Directorate Bicycle Programme. This programme deals with the development of new types of design and the assessment of current types of design. The Bicycle Programme is focusing on the safety of cyclists in urban areas only, as 9 out of 10 recorded accidents occur in cities. This report consists of four parts, of which the first part outlines the general accident situation in Denmark, with special emphasis on the safety of cyclists. The second part deals with the safety of cyclists at junctions. The third part deals with the safety of cyclists on stretches of roads between major intersections. The fourth part briefly describes other Danish and foreign studies of cyclist safety. In this part, a comparison is made between recent study of cycle paths described in Part 3 and two earlier Danish studies of cycle path safety. Finally, advice is given on how cyclist safety can be improved in specific areas of the road network and, in conclusion, a description is given of further research.
