Abstract

This paper identifies the importance of understanding various issues relating to accidents at highway-railroad grade crossings. It provides a synthesis of various types of accidents that commonly occur at highway-railroad grade crossings throughout the United States. It also discusses the causes of various types of accidents occurring at grade crossings and uses observed patterns to determine commonly occurring accidents at such crossings. It discusses attributes that could be used for accident reconstruction programs such as driver expectations, signal timing, signal phasing plans, geometric improvements, and other transportation system management measures. The paper discusses safety improvement efforts such as integration of highway-rail traffic control systems and roadway traffic management systems, provision of advance warning signs to vehicular and pedestrian traffic as well as improving active and passive signs and signals. Finally, the paper also signifies the use of advanced technology to enhance safety at highway-railroad grade crossings.
