Abstract

Existence of level crossings where railways and roads cross on the ground level is one of the weak points for the railway transportation, and accidents at level crossings show a higher ratio in railway accidents. East Japan Railway Co. (JR East) has been seeking countermeasures in order to eliminate level crossing accidents since 1987. This report describes how JR East has been taking countermeasures against level crossing accidents and how they are going to provide level crossing information to car drivers through the functions of ITS (Intelligent Transport Systems).
