Abstract

The accidents discussed in this review illustrate five important railroad /highway grade crossings safety issues: 1) routing 2) motor vehicle driver behaviour 3) booby-trap crossings 4) ineffectiveness of audible warnings, and 5) insufficient vehicle ground clearance on crossings with elevated surface profiles.
