Abstract
The highway sector is offering new technologies to boost safety for powered two wheelers. Because motorcycle riders form a minority of road users, their safety is almost routinely ignored, even in those countries providing high safety standards for road users in trucks, buses or passenger cars.However, a new part is to be added to the existing EN1317 barrier standard. It will contain "provisions for the evaluation of the performance of safety barriers under impact by a powered two-wheeled vehicle (PTW) rider sliding along the ground". This article discusses some of the various barrier attachments being used to reduce injury and death caused by striking thesupport posts of conventional barriers.
