Sample size requirements for traffic surveys.

Abstract

The potential benefits of traffic management measures include a reduction in delays, fuel savings and a reduction in air emissions. How to design travel surveys so as to detect whether or not significant changes in the various travel time components have occurred is examined. Issues addressed include types of measurement techniques, the inherent variability in measured travel times, delays and number of stops, and the identification of an adequate sample size. Data from a study of signal co- ordination on Unley /Belair road in Adelaide is used to illustrate the approach.
