Abstract

In June 1964 the City of San Jose, California and IBM entered into a joint study agreement to determine the feasibility of using a digital computer for the control of traffic signals. One year later, the actual control of signals by a computer began, and on December 31, 1966, the study was conclude. This report documents the philosophy, design, procedure, and results of that project. The major project goals -- proving the feasibility of a computer system for the purpose and providing an improved control system for San Jose -- have been researched.
