Abstract

SARTRE is an acronym for the project "Social Attitudes to Road Traffic Risk in Europe", which implies a collaboration between a number of organisations in the field of traffic safety and road traffic research in Europe to carry out co-ordinated surveys. The project started in the 90¦s and included then most of the countries of Western and Central Europe. In the continued SARTRE project a vast number of new interviews were conducted with European drivers to study their attitudes to traffic and traffic safety. The interviews of the second SARTRE study consisted of about 100 questions each (about 200 in the first round), and in the whole project 20725 interviews were carried out in 19 countries in Western and Central Europe. The main topics were speeds, seat belts and alcohol, but the interviews also covered some more general traffic safety issues, as well as some questions concerning self-reported behaviour. The purpose of the report is mainly to give a reasonably clear presentation of the available data in paper format for those who prefer such browsing, but as an introduction the report contains also a very brief account of the SARTRE project together with a number of comments regarding the limitations of the study and the obtained data. The major part of the report contains 110 tables, each giving the results of a single question of the interview. The results are presented as total response distributions for each participating country, supplemented with average or median results for ease of comparison. (Author/publisher)
