Deploying congestion pricing systems is one possible way to relieve regional transportation problems by using these systems as a tool to manage demand and additionally create funds for maintaining, preserving and improving transportation infrastructure. Infrastructure based cordon pricing solutions like in London or Singapore offer only limited means for demand management and impose significant costs and time delays related to system scope extension like area change or change to distance related pricing. A System based on off the shelf components relying on existing infrastructure (GPS for location referencing and GSM for communication) could overcome these limitations.
