Abstract

At the present time satellite navigation-positioning systems are used in 40% of all roundwood transportation in Finland. They were first introduced by two large roundwood procurement organisations in 1992-93. Their experience indicates that the satellite navigation-positioning technology has become a permanent tool in roundwood procurement. Such a system is necessary if the whole chain of roundwood procurement is to be managed effectively in an update fashion using a system approach and information technology. The authors consider that within a few years almost all the entrepreneurs in roundwood procurement will be utilising satellite navigation-positioning systems in Finland. (A)
