Abstract

The SCAN-MATIC road monitoring system is an open, PC-based system which can be used for a variety of surveillance and monitoring applications and can be linked to variable message signs. Details are given of the data which can be gathered by the outstations and the information which can be displayed. Under normal operation the outstation is contacted hourly for statistical information. In an alarm situation automatic contact is made with the central computer. Communication is by leased line, telephone line, radio, satellite or Infranet. The system provides the operator with a convenient method of studying the relationship between the weather, road conditions and traffic flow.
